The ‘Grasshopper’ skeleton clock is based on the first marine chronometer made by one of the world’s most famous clock makers, John Harrison (1693-1776).
[[CR]]
[[CR]] Harrison spent years perfecting marine chronometers in order to win the prize offered under the Longitude Act (1714) of £20,000 for any invention capable of calculating longitude to within 30 miles. His original time-keepers made it possible for seafarers to navigate accurately and can be viewed at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. [[CR]] The clock features the ‘grasshopper escapement’ operated by two inter-linked pendulums that compensated for the motion of a ship.

[[CR]]
[[CR]] This superb example features a cable-wound fusée which regulates the force exerted by the mainspring so that the power is constant from the beginning of the wind to the end.
